From the South! Memphis. TN. I am an African-American Studies major and Government (Public Policy) minor. I am also a Multicultural Intern in the Office of Admission, because I love diversity and I want to be a part of bringing interesting women of color to Smith to have amazing experiences.

My favorite things about Smith:

—>The beautiful campus

—>Resources (accessible professors, FUNDING, fancy technology, etc).

—>Cultural Organizations (hint) BSA! (Black Students’ Alliance)

—>People’s openness

—>House community

—>FRIENDS!

—>WFI (Women for Financial Independence)- they tell you useful info about managing money and building a strong financial future in addition to a great LUNCH!

—> The great Admissions staff: they do a wonderful job of making sure that Smith represents students of all walks of life.
My Personal Faves:

~Shopping

-Hmmmm, here I go again! I’ve been obsessed with this song recently and in the midst of my excitement and love for it, I have issues!

I think of one of my favorite Smith professors when I think about the complication of the use of the n-word. It is used loosely in music and ordinary conversations as any other word, and there is definitely a lot of discussion happening in the academic world about its use in popular culture.

My conflict is one of hypocrisy because, clearly, I love this song that has the n-word in its title, but at other times I don’t condone it. These other times involve non-black people and I don’t know just others. I’m just having trouble with the idea that sometimes I hear the word and its fine, but other times I hear it and it bothers me.

I guess my concern is like the normal one: I don’t want to use the word around some people who think that repeating it makes them more connected to my culture or my personal experience. Then it gets really complicated when you think of the history of the word and I just have to keep thinking about it….(The art of the half-formed thought)!

I’ll revisit this later

Thanksgiving!

Ahhhhhh! This weekend has been chaotic and...

BLACKOUT AT SMITH COLLEGE! This weekend has been chaotic and rather precarious. On Saturday night there was a regional power outage that affected the entire city of Northampton, surrounding towns, and the state of Connecticut (there may be more places, but I’m not sure). At Smith, we had no campus-wide power for 2 days: Saturday night, Sunday, Sunday night, and the power was restored on Monday morning.

I had fun for the most part, the only thing was that I hate being alone in the dark and cold, so I camped out in some of my friend’s rooms. I really feel bad for those who don’t have friends in situations like this! No offense hermits!

Anyway, this isn’t the first or the second time that I’ve experienced a power outage. In Memphis, we have frequent thunderstorms, tornadoes, and flooding as a result, so the power is always at risk during these types of weather.

Experiencing this at Smith, where I am not surrounded by family, makes me so much more grateful for what I have. We attend one of the most elite institutions of higher education in the country and most of all we have wonderful staff and administration that actually CARE about our well-being (they kept us updated every chance they could over the weekend).

I’d like to thank Smith College Dining Services, Facilities, cleaning crews, and all other departments that kept this campus running smoothly over the weekend. We couldn’t have survived without them. We are smart, but some of us got a little beside ourselves, and lost sight of the privilege that we actually have.

I am thankful to attend a college like Smith, I really felt safe and cared for over this weekend. That’s love! Go Smith!

By the 1960s, scientists had determined that the mysterious object was the first documented supernova. Later, they pinpointed the object, known as RCW 86, as a supernova remnant located about 8,000 light-years away but remained puzzled at how the star’s spherical remains were larger than expected.
